Pastor's Paragraph 2/14/19

Pastor’s Paragraph — February 14, 2019

My days of being your pastor are rapidly drawing to a close.  We have two more Sundays to worship our Lord together.  This coming Sunday’s (February 17) worship service will include the baptisms of seven new Christians!  My sermon (which is based on Numbers 13:1-3, 17-33; 14:1-4) is entitled “Where Do We Go From Here?”  On February 24, I will be preaching my final sermon as your pastor.  Taken from Philippians 1:3-6, the working title of this message is “Thank You, I’ll Remember You, God be with You.”

In coming days, I will continue to express my thanks to God and to you (my CBC family) for the opportunity and privilege of being the pastor of such an extraordinary church for these past 27 1/2 years.  For now, I want to thank you for all the many birthday greetings and messages that I received this past Sunday which was my 66th birthday.  Being able to worship God with you on my birthday #66 was a gift that I will always treasure.

I look forward to worshipping with you the next two Sundays.  May God bless each of you during this time of transition!

Blessings from your grateful pastor,
Bob

Change a generation with something as simple as an invitation.
For many of us, inviting people into our lives and homes feels more like inviting judgment on our entertaining skills and stress on our already maxed-out schedules. But what if you knew that opening your front door had the power to radically change the world? To make an impact and leave a legacy with everyday invitations?

Jen Schmidt has set out to reframe how we think about hospitality and to equip us to walk a road of welcome in our daily lives. Jen knows that every time we choose open-door living—whether in our homes or by taking hospitality on the road just like Jesus—those we invite in get to experience the lived-out Gospel, our kids grow up in a life-lab of generosity, and we trade insecurity for connection.

Just Open the Door is a personal yes-you-can guide to offering the life-changing gift of invitation. Whether you’re a seasoned host looking for renewed inspiration or a nervous newbie not sure where to begin, these personal stories, practical ideas, and poignant insights will give you the confidence you need to see your home as the most likely location for changing the world around you, one open door at a time.

Transition Team Announcement 1/31/19

The Transition Team has posted a 1/31/19 update that can be found on the Transition Information page. You can read the update below as well.

Transition Team Update 1-31-19

Here is a list of the Transition Team’s immediate and long-term goals. We are well on the way of getting a short-term Interim Pastor in place and moving on to the next step. Check in for additional updates on our link on the church website. Thank you for your prayers and support!

I. Short-term Interim Pastor and Pulpit Supply - March 3- May 26 (Memorial Day weekend):

Pulpit Speaker – 8:30 and 11:00 service each Sunday

The Transition Team believes that a consistent presence in the pulpit to lead the church after Bob’s final Sunday and through the Lenten season and Easter is needed.

A short term Interim Pastor will preach at two services each Sunday morning with no other pastoral duties except preaching on Sunday. (The college services will continue with Niki Hays leading until classes conclude in the summer as usual.) The Transition Team has a “deep bench” of substitute speakers in addition to staff to fill in on any Sunday the short-term interim might have a conflict.

II. Options for Creation of Congregational Profile and New Pastor Profile Documents:

The Transition Team has begun assembling data about our church and community that need to be in a congregational profile. We still need input from the church, and think that large-scale congregational conversations and surveys need to be done in order to complete the creation of a profile that reflects who we are, and who we are looking for.

Once we secure our short-term interim pastor, the Transition Team sees completion of these documents as its next task.

Options we are considering:

                1. No outside facilitator/drafter - Calvary does it on its own. There are a lot of resources available for churches wishing to undertake this project internally.

                2. Hire outside facilitator/drafter with experience with churches which have undergone a transition or leadership search.

III. Long-term Interim Pastor

After Memorial Day weekend, the Transition Team will again need to have preaching lined up for the open-ended time between then and the ultimate call of a pastor. If the short-term interim pastor has been successful, and is interested in continuing, the Team may request an extension of the original commitment, but the Transition Team is also scouting out other possible interim candidates to serve the church going forward during this time.

FAQ’S

How can the Build-A-Bed program help with our mission initiative? Build-A-Bed is an opportunity for everyone in the church to participate.  On assembly and delivery days we have people ages 6 -86 involved.  The whole church can have ownership in this project.

How much does it cost to build a bed? Lumber, materials, mattress and nighttime kits cost about $150.

How do we get names of children who need beds? We work with school resource counselors.

What are nighttime kits? A kit includes fitted and flat sheets, a comforter, pillows, an alarm clock, books,

Bible, hygiene items, and a teddy bear.

What skill level is needed? The beds (twin size or bunk beds) are simple to build and we will provide easy to follow blueprints.

Do we need storage space? It takes 2-3 weeks to complete the process of cutting, drilling, staining and assembly.

What tools and materials are required for the project? Lumber, chop saws, cordless drills, palm sanders, sand paper, and stain.

HISTORY In the fall of 2016, I had a heartbreaking conversation with a second grade teacher.  She shared with me, through her tears, the story of two students who did not have beds.  I reflected on the conversation and thought this is a basic need we can meet.  I spoke with a few church members, made some phone calls, and in March of 2017 our church was able to construct and deliver 12 beds.  What a fantastic day! What an important need to meet!  What an opportunity to share God’s love.  Our congregation, especially young families, bought into this ministry.  As of 2019,  we’ve completed 5 Build-A-Bed events and constructed and delivered 161 beds--complete with bedding and nighttime kits. The need is great in Lexington KY and all around our state.  I hope your church will consider working in the spirit of partnership to help kids in need in Lexington and the Commonwealth.
