Women's Study--Church of the Small Things 4/10/19

Church of the Small Things
The Million Little Pieces That Make Up a Life
Wednesdays at 6:15pm starting April 10th
(6 Week Study - Video & Discussion - Begins Apr. 10)
Rachel’s Room - 3rd Floor - EB1

Join us Wednesday, April 10th! No book or sign up needed.

It’s been said, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.” The pressure of that can be staggering as we spend our days looking for that big thing that promises to take our breath away. Meanwhile, we lose sight of the small significance of fully living with every breath we take.

Melanie Shankle, New York Times bestselling author and writer at The Big Mama Blog , tackles these questions head on in her fourth book, Church of the Small Things. Easygoing and relatable, she speaks directly to the heart of women of all ages who are longing to find significance and meaning in the normal, sometimes mundane world of driving carpool to soccer practice, attending class on their college campus, cooking meals for their family, or taking care of a sick loved one.

*No need to get the book or sign up for this study. Contact Jenny Carman or Becky Wills if you have questions.

Transition Team Update (C.A.T.) 3/20/19

Transition Team Announcement - 3/20/19
(Note: this announcement will be distributed to Sunday School folders on 3/24/19)

The Congregational Assessment Tool - The CAT

What is it?
The Congregational Assessment Tool is an online survey used to anonymously collect information from a congregation. The CAT has been used in over 3,000 churches and will provide key indicators of our congregational health along with areas of challenge and potential growth.  It will allow us to collect and understand the range of views that exist at Calvary Baptist Church and the possibilities, willingness, capacity, and energy for moving our ministry into the future.

Why is Calvary doing the CAT?
The information gathered will provide a clear picture of who we are as a church and what directions are most important for our future. It provides a way for the Transition Team and the Pulpit Committee to receive information directly and efficiently from the Calvary congregation. This honest assessment of Calvary will be vitally important in the selection of our next Senior Pastor.

Who is involved?
All Calvary members and attendees who are able to take the CAT in a single 30-minute sitting at a computer.

When is it happening?
The CAT assessment window will open beginning April 1, 2019 and will remain open until April 30, 2019.

How do we participate?
If your email address is on file with Calvary and your receive Calvary Connections, you are all set. If not, provide an email address to us by sending an email to: miller.rebecca613@gmail.com.  Paper copies will be available to those who do not have email access, just call the Church office. If needed, a computer station will be made available to those members who want to come to the church to fill out their CAT survey. Hours and Room will be announced later.

FAQ’S

How can the Build-A-Bed program help with our mission initiative? Build-A-Bed is an opportunity for everyone in the church to participate.  On assembly and delivery days we have people ages 6 -86 involved.  The whole church can have ownership in this project.

How much does it cost to build a bed? Lumber, materials, mattress and nighttime kits cost about $150.

How do we get names of children who need beds? We work with school resource counselors.

What are nighttime kits? A kit includes fitted and flat sheets, a comforter, pillows, an alarm clock, books,

Bible, hygiene items, and a teddy bear.

What skill level is needed? The beds (twin size or bunk beds) are simple to build and we will provide easy to follow blueprints.

Do we need storage space? It takes 2-3 weeks to complete the process of cutting, drilling, staining and assembly.

What tools and materials are required for the project? Lumber, chop saws, cordless drills, palm sanders, sand paper, and stain.

HISTORY In the fall of 2016, I had a heartbreaking conversation with a second grade teacher.  She shared with me, through her tears, the story of two students who did not have beds.  I reflected on the conversation and thought this is a basic need we can meet.  I spoke with a few church members, made some phone calls, and in March of 2017 our church was able to construct and deliver 12 beds.  What a fantastic day! What an important need to meet!  What an opportunity to share God’s love.  Our congregation, especially young families, bought into this ministry.  As of 2019,  we’ve completed 5 Build-A-Bed events and constructed and delivered 161 beds--complete with bedding and nighttime kits. The need is great in Lexington KY and all around our state.  I hope your church will consider working in the spirit of partnership to help kids in need in Lexington and the Commonwealth.

Women's Study "He Chose the Nails" 3/18/19

Hope you’ll join us starting March 18th for a Monday morning Women’s Bible Study He Chose the Nails: What God Did to Win Your Heart by Max Lucado. The five week (short video and discussion) study will be held in Rachel’s Room (EB1 3rd Floor) on Mondays from 11:00am - 12:30pm.. Sign up by emailing Julie at wjdill35@gmail.com.

Linger on the hill of Calvary.
Rub a finger on the timber and press the nail into your hand.
Taste the tinge of cheap wine and feel the scrape of a thorn on your brow.
Touch the velvet dirt, moist with the blood of God.
Allow the tools of torture to tell their story.
Listen as they tell you what God did to win your heart.

National Day of Prayer at Calvary 5/1/19

At Calvary Baptist Church we are planning an intergenerational prayer program on Wednesday, May 1st at 6:30pm in Fellowship Hall for the National Day of Prayer. We have scheduled our Day of Prayer a day in advance of the National Day of Prayer (on Thursday, May 2nd), so that more of our church family may participate in this event.

Our theme for the 2019 National Day of Prayer on May 2, 2019 is Love One Another. The theme comes from the words of Jesus in John 13:34, “Love one another. Just as I have loved you.”

The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was unanimously amended by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Thursday, May 5, 1988, designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer. Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.

Our hope is that individuals, churches, and spiritual leaders in America, will humble ourselves and unify in prevailing prayer for the next great move of God in America. We can come together in clear agreement that this is our greatest need. We can become a visible union, standing together in prayer. We can pray more than ever before, and practice extraordinary prayer for the next great move of God in America that will catapult the message of the gospel nationally and internationally.

"There is no great movement of God that has ever occurred that does not begin with the extraordinary prayer of God's people." Dr. Ronnie Floyd
